Auroras originate from the sun. During solar explosions and flares, a significant number of charged particles are thrown out of the sun’s atmosphere and sucked into a solar wind. This wind travels over 93 million miles and reaches Earth within 40 hours. Earth’s magnetic field shields us from this potent solar wind, creating the terrestrial magnetosphere. Yet it is penetrable at the poles. The charged particles travel down these magnetic lines into our atmosphere, where they collide with oxygen and nitrogen atoms.
